Habitat correlates of wild boar density and rooting along an environmental gradient

چکیده

Abstract In wild ungulates, habitat choice usually is influenced by foraging constraints and predator avoidance, potentially leading to spatial variation of population density (e.g., greater densities in food rich or safer habitats). Assessing habitat-correlates abundance activity turn important understanding determinants distribution. We assessed correlates presence, density, rooting, for boar Sus scrofa, the most widespread ungulate world, six protected areas central Italy. worked along an altitudinal gradient ranging from coast mountains, late spring-summer 2019. surveyed 617 sampling plots randomly placed onto study with tessellation stratified sampling, where we used fecal counts estimate visually estimated proportion rooted area. Overall estimates rooting (± standard error) varied 3.5 ± 2.0 17.9 5.4 individuals/km2 1.4 0.8% 10.9 1.1% ground. Density showed a moderate yet nonsignificant correlation across sites. Probability abundance, were higher ecotone habitats (transition between wooded open areas). Topography did not influence presence local abundance. Rooting increased decreasing slope rock cover, as well increasing elevation, possibly due soil supporting forage nutritional quality. Our results support importance boar, emphasizing role these transitional period nursing/weaning offspring, when crops are actively growing. Differences overall sites may depend on site-specific features (soil moisture availability alternative resources). Future studies should test inter-annual differences changes density. Notwithstanding latter, identified significant ecological drivers activity.

Niche Partitioning Along an Environmental Gradient

Biological systematics studies suggest that species are discretized in niche space. That is, rather than seeing a continuum of organism types with respect to continuous environmental variations, observers instead find discrete species or clumps of species, with one clump separated from another in niche space by a gap. Here, using a simple one dimensional model with a smoothly varying environmen...

Habitat width along a latitudinal gradient

We use the Chowdhury ecosystem model, one of the most complex agent-based ecological models, to test the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis, with regard to habitat width, i.e., whether tropical species generally have narrower habitats than high latitude ones. Application of the model has given realistic results in previous studies on latitudinal gradients in species diversity and Rapoport's rule...

Avian community structure and habitat use of Polylepis forests along an elevation gradient

BACKGROUND As one of the highest forest ecosystems in the world, Polylepis forests are recognized both as center of endemism and diversity along the Andes and as an ecosystem under serious threat from habitat loss, fragmentation, and climate change due to human activities. Effective conservation efforts are limited, in part, by our poor understanding of the ecology and habitat needs of the ecos...

Habitat Sampling and Habitat Selection by Female Wild Turkeys: Ecological Correlates and Reproductive Consequences

ABST•,Acr.--Habitat sampling can allow much more effective habitat selection for longterm activities such as nesting and may be directly linked to fitness. We studied the process of habitat sampling and selection in female Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in the Arkansas Ozarks. In particular, we tested the prediction that movements prior to selecting nesting habitat correlate with the qualit...
